
In the 13th century, young slave Hitara is entrusted by a trader to a scholarly family in Tus, eastern Iran, for her education. She first tries to flee, but learns the value of knowledge. Mistress Fatima dotes on her like a daughter, and Hitara studies Euclid’s Elements and much more. Eight years after heir Muhammad leaves for Nishapur to pursue learning, the Mongols sack Tus. Tolui’s army captures Hitara; Fatima dies protecting her. The Elements is seized too. Taken to Mongolia, Hitara begins to plot revenge against the Mongols.
